Boko Haram attacks Nigeria's northeast city Maiduguri

The Islamic sect attacked Maiduguri on Sunday Feb 1 starting a gun battle with the Nigerian army killing 8 people. Eye witnesses told AFP news that the attacks started 3:00 (02:00 GMT) and heavy fighting and Gun fire took place at the southern edge of the city between insurgents and the Nigerian Army supported by the Vigilantes who have taken central role in fighting the terror group.

Boko Haram began their operation in 2009 to carve out an Islamic state. The conflict ever since has displaced 1,500,000 people and claimed more than 2,000 lives last year.
