NCC says subscribers base 129million

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said that the country has an estimated 129 million active telephone subscribers, while over 50 million Nigerians have access to the Internet.

The Chairman of the Board of NCC, Peter Igho, who disclosed this on Monday in Umuahia, Abia State during a courtesy call on Governor Theodore Orji, said telecommunications had significantly enhanced business transactions in Nigeria.

According to NCC, Nigeria has a tele -density of 92 per cent while the telecommunications industry contributes 8.5 per cent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

The commission said it was making concerted efforts to improve the quality of service to Nigerians and lamented that multiple taxation, hindering of the right of way and vandalisation of its facilities had continued to be a major challenge to service provision.

Igho said NCC had given ICT equipment to 38 secondary schools in Abia State, among other items given to tertiary institutions in Abia, and appealed to the governor to partner his commission to improve the quality of service to the people.

Responding, Orji commended the NCC for doing a good job in regulating the activities of service providers in the country, describing communication as an essential service.

Orji promised to address some of the challenges militating against the operations of the commission.

He said that the state government had made relevant laws to harmonise the issue of multiple taxation and right of way, promising that his administration would continue to create conducive environment for business in the state.

The governor, however, appealed to the NCC to provide more facilities to educational institutions in the state as a way of assisting the state government.
